The Meridian School Library Mission, Policies and Procedures

Mission

The mission of The Meridian School Library is to provide services and resources that foster a love of reading and literature and enable all students and staff to acquire information literacy skills that will help them succeed at the school and in lifelong pursuits.

Goals

The Library's goals include emphasis on information literacy, fostering love of reading and literature, research strategies, and use of technology. Information literacy is taught using the tenets of the Big6 (grades 3-5) and Super3 (grades K-2)--an approach that involves a step-by-step process of critical thinking and problem solving.

Policies and Procedures

The library is open for use from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. each school day. All students have access to the technology provided by the library and learn its use through their weekly library instructional classes and lab classes. Students visit the library at least once per week and as many times as any individual student needs to use the library. The number of checkouts is 1 item per grade level.

All students are expected to reflect the following behaviors. Note that intermediate students are awarded points toward earning a traveling library award.

  1. Listen to and follow directions
  2. Respect library resources
  3. Read silently
  4. Respect others/personal space
  5. On task 100%

Donations

The Library accepts donations in many forms--volunteer activity, monetary gifts, books in print and on tape, and DVDs. Volunteers may assist with processing or shelving books, creating displays, and help make the library an inviting place to be.
