History and Campus of Meridian School

Founded in 1976 as Perkins Elementary School, the school was an outgrowth of the original Perkins School for Children, opened in a local church as a preschool and kindergarten in 1946. In 1981 the school moved to its present location in the century old Good Shepherd Center in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood, and in 1997 became The Meridian School.

Meridian School entranceNestled among trees in a park-like setting, the Good Shepherd Center provides an urban oasis for education. Spacious and welcoming, this historic building is home not only to Meridian but to more than two dozen community organizations and professionals such as the Wallingford Senior Center, Alliance Francaise, and Seattle Tilth. This collaborative environment offers enriching interactions for students and faculty, and models the many ways in which we can learn from those around us.

The lush green landscape of Meridian Park that surrounds the school is reminiscent of a country orchard. Enclosed by a tall hedge of holly and horse chestnut, the recently renovated playground incorporates art as thoughtful aesthetic features and feels like a secret garden. The expansive outdoor space provides ample resources for creative play and physical activity – integral to promoting balance and joy in children’s lives.
