First Grade:
Building the Foundations
First grade is a year of remarkable development. Students solidify essential academic skills while developing greater self-awareness and a stronger sense of community and the world around them.
Literacy
Students strengthen their phonemic awareness and phonics while also developing fluency, vocabulary, and oral language. Reading and writing become tools for learning to express and share ideas with increasing independence.
Math
Students explore math concepts through hands-on activities that progress from concrete to pictorial and eventually to abstract concepts. This approach deepens their understanding and sparks excitement about how numbers work in real-life applications.
Science
Topics such as pollinators, sound waves, and the properties of matter are explored through inquiry-based projects and hands-on experiments in both the classroom and our Creativity and Science Labs.
Social Studies
Social studies begins with a focus on the self. Students explore identity, family histories, and lived experiences, gradually expanding their lens to include classmates and the local community.
Social-Emotional Learning
Social-emotional learning (SEL) is woven into each day, helping students develop friendships, resolve conflicts, and care for their classroom and school environment. Through mindfulness and reflection, students begin to see themselves as important members of a larger community.
