Check out PreK’s new backyard! Over the summer, we expanded the Corliss House to make more room for our PreKindergarten class. Thanks to our amazing facilities manager, teachers, parent volunteers, and friends of Meridian, we thoughtfully designed and renovated the backyard as an extension of the classroom. The transformed space will help us create more experiential learning opportunities, support students’ physical development, encourage imaginative play, and foster a joy for outdoor learning!

A Look Back on The Corliss House Project
As Meridian’s first capital initiative, the Corliss House has quickly become an educational cornerstone for The Meridian School, thanks largely to the generous support of families, alumni, and friends.
When we opened the doors to our new PreKindergarten program in 2023, we set out to create a unique classroom environment tailored to our PreK students’ needs. Our curriculum for our youngest Monarchs is specifically designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and instill a love of learning.
From its inception, the Corliss House project was designed to reflect Meridian’s values. The classroom and outdoor space are crucial in our play-based, inquiry-driven approach to learning. The Corliss House quickly became more than a classroom; it evolved into a vibrant community hub where families and children alike feel welcome, respected, and ready to learn.

Looking Forward for Future Monarchs
This backyard renovation is a beautiful investment in future students. Daily movement, outdoor exploration, and time in nature are so important for our young students, and they help cultivate mindfulness and fine and gross motor development. This backyard refresh will be a wonderful way to help teach our students about stewardship and Meridian Cares.
This project exemplifies the power of community working together toward a shared vision, and it will continue to enrich our students’ lives for years to come.
Thank you to everyone who contributed time, resources, and enthusiasm to make this dream a reality. The Corliss House backyard now stands as a joyful, vibrant extension of our commitment to nurturing the whole child: mind, heart, hands, and voice.
